First things first, where did you meet your husband? How did you know he was the one?

We met at University back in 2006 when we were 19; we were studying the same course and kept crossing each other’s paths at parties and lectures. James convinced me to go on a date with him and the rest is history! I knew from that moment that we had a very strong connection and amazing chemistry.

How did he propose? Tell us the story!

James proposed on Boxing Day in 2011. He surprised me with a trip to Lorne which is a beautiful coastal town in Victoria. We stayed at the same hotel that we stayed on our 1 year anniversary 5 years prior. He proposed on our balcony overlooking the ocean, it was beautiful!

Once the wedding plans started, what made you decide on a Vera Wang gown?

From the moment I saw the Diana gown online I knew I had to have it- only problem was there was no Vera Wang store in Melbourne! I contemplated flying to New York or London and then my lucky day arrived, Vera Wang opened a boutique in Sydney! I booked my appointment and flights straight away and before I knew it I was standing in the boutique trying on the most amazing gowns. The experience was second to none and I purchased the Diana gown on the spot.

How did you accessorize to make your wedding day unique?

I wanted my gorgeous dress to be the stand out feature; therefore I opted for very minimal accessories. Just a beautiful diamond bracelet, earrings and port wine stained lips; my dress did all the rest!

What was the inspiration or theme for your wedding?

We wanted our special day to be classy and sophisticated with a touch of rustic charm. Our reception was held in the beautiful Royal Botanic Gardens in Melbourne and this set the stage for a magnificent event. Lots of varied white flowers, greenery and rustic wood amongst hundreds of little tea lights. Black tie and cocktail dresses, loads of champagne and spirits and a fantastic band kept everyone partying!

Did you incorporate any other Vera Wang products into your wedding? If so how?

The night before my wedding day, I gave my parents a beautiful Vera Wang silver frame with a photo of the three of us inside. It was a photo that was taken on our last trip to Sydney, where we all got to see my Diana gown ready to take back with us to Melbourne. It was a very special weekend that I shared with my parents and the beautiful frame will always be a reminder of this time together. I also decided to get the Vera Wang long veil which was the perfect match for Diana.

Did you stay true to the Old English wedding rhyme: Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue. If so, what were yours?

I certainly did! My Aunty made me a garter from my mothers wedding gown. It was delicate ivory Chantilly lace with a baby blue ribbon. My something borrowed was a French lace handkerchief with my initial on it that my sister lent to me. My something new was my beautiful Vera Wang gown!

What tips do you have for new brides picking out their wedding dress?

Don’t let anyone sway your decision, this is your day and you should get exactly what you want! Follow your heart and you will make the right decision.

What was your favorite part of the day? And, are there any other anecdotes you would like to share?

I had many memorable moments leading up to our wedding and on our wedding day. I guess the best part is knowing that you have orchestrated this magnificent event and everyone in your life that you love, is in the same room at the same time sharing one of the happiest moments in your life. Our wedding was so special in so many ways and we would not change a thing!

Bride: Erica Choi
Groom: Hoon Kim
Wedding gown style: Gemma
Wedding date: September 23, 2012
Boutique purchased: Vera Wang Madison Avenue, NY
Location: New York, NY and Seoul, Korea
Photographer: J.U Photography

First things first, where did you meet your husband and how did you know he was the one?

We met at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), sharing the same passion and interests for design. I was pursuing my undergraduate degree in Graphic Design and he was a grad student in the same major. We were aware of each other since we were in the same department, but did not get to know each other until we both moved to New York. There, we spent a lot of time together, and initially I thought we were just good friends (or a close “oppa” in Korean). I realized quickly that Hoon had other plans for us!

How did he propose? Tell us the story!

One wintery Saturday he asked me if I wanted to go take photos , and of course I said yes! We have always loved taking photos together in our free time. He also told me he was going to have his friend, who is a professional photographer, take photos of us together. I ended up having to work that day due to an urgent project. So we rescheduled for sunday and headed to Central Park. As we walked through the park taking photos his friend was simultaneously snapping pictures. The whole time, I was thinking, “Wow, they are really into this!” I was about ready to call it a day when my husband suddenly turned to me with a very peculiar look on his face. He started reciting a speech he had prepared and tears immediately began streaming down my face. Thank God I had my sunglasses on! When he finally asked me to marry him I just kept nodding yes…I was absolutely shocked. He reached into his coat pocket, trying to take out the ring box, but it was stuck. It was so funny watching him try to take it out. Everything felt so happy. I couldn’t believe his friend knew all along that he was going to propose! I will never forget that day, it was so pure and sweet.

Once the wedding plans started, what made you decide on a Vera Wang gown?

I was always in love with Vera’s gowns. There is just something about them – a feeling, a sense, the attention to detail, that no other dresses possess. Trying on dresses at the Madison Ave boutique was an experience in itself. I have a very petite figure, so it was difficult to find a dress that was not overwhelming to my frame. But when I tried on the Gemma, the shape and the fabrics were so flattering and extraordinary. I knew it was the one. I felt incredibly beautiful in it.

We have an iPhone app, “Vera Wang on Weddings” – did you happen to use that in preparation for the big day? If so, how did it benefit you?

Yes! The photos were so helpful in referencing to my vendors. There were various styles featured in the app, but they were all in line with the mood I was trying to carry out for my wedding. The articles were really helpful as well, especially in the beginning when I had no idea where to start.

How did you accessorize to make your wedding day unique?

I wore a silk chiffon flower clip in my hair from Sibo Designs on Etsy, a designer based in the Netherlands. I also wore these beautiful Swarovski drop earrings which were borrowed from my
mother, and ivory Yves Saint Laurent heels to complement the overall look.

What was the inspiration or theme for your wedding?

I wanted a very New York chic wedding for the reception here in the city, but I also wanted to bring that to my ceremony in Seoul, Korea. Even in my everyday life, I go for a very clean, minimal look, but with an urban edge. I wanted to incorporate this feel, but also add a touch of elegance to it. I think also since my husband and I are graphic designers, it came a bit naturally as it is reflected in our work. Our color theme for the two events mainly used whites, ivorys, and grays, but involving different textures to elevate the color theme as well, such as in our florals, but also our stationary – letter pressing our invitations and menu’s and using an engraving stamp. The locations also epitomized our vision for the wedding – Jungsik, which is a New Korean fine-dining restaurant in Tribeca, NY was the perfect spot for our reception because it is one of my favorite restaurants in the city. It is an intimate space with the most delicious food and elegant modernity. It also held meaning because my husband did the branding for the restaurant when it opened. The ceremony space was La Cucina at Seoul National University, a modern Italian restaurant at the school my husband attended for college, but it is also the most iconic university in Korea, so it meant a lot for both of us, reflecting both our heritage.

Did you incorporate any other Vera Wang products into your wedding? (I.e. fragrance, fine papers etc.) If so how?

My veil was the Signature Vera fingertip veil, which I thought was very fitting for my height and frame, and was perfect for the Gemma gown.

What tips do you have for new brides picking out their wedding dress?

I say look for inspiration everywhere – especially online, using all kinds of references, both professional (brand websites, magazines), and personal (blogs, Pinterest, Tumblr). Also try on dresses at your favorite boutique to first see the style that fits your body type – you may be surprised by what styles actually look best on you!

What was your favorite part of the day? And, are there any other anecdotes you would like to share?

A few seconds just before walking down the aisle, my dad gave me a small squeeze while holding my hand. My parents have showed me so much unconditional love my entire life and at that moment I was overcome by a wave of emotion. Another favorite moment was the first time I saw Hoon at the altar and him looking back at me. It made me think, “Wow, it is finally happening!” Having everyone you care so much about, all in one place and at one time to celebrate with you is a rare thing that might be a once in a lifetime event. I was overjoyed to see everyone having a good time and laughing with one another. Being able to laugh and dine with people who are so special and dear to me, to celebrate my marriage with the love of my life, is something I will cherish forever.

First things first, where did you meet your husband? How did you know he was the one?

Richard and I originally met as teenagers when we both attended a summer theater program at New York University. I’m from Northern California and he’s from New Jersey so it was quite a feat that we ended up in the same place. We became close friends who harbored little crushes on each other and shared one amazing kiss that we still remember vividly. At the end of the summer we went our separate ways back to our hometowns. We fell out of touch when we went on to college, me at NYU and Richard at Carnegie Mellon. Fast forward 7 years. I was still living in New York and working in the West Village. One day I was walking down West 4th St. when out of nowhere I heard someone call my name. I turned and there was Richard! It turned out he’d moved to the city a few months prior and was working just a couple blocks away. We exchanged numbers and as we parted ways my heart was pounding. Richard later told me his hands were literally shaking. I think I knew he was the one as soon as I saw his face that day.

How did he propose? Tell us the story!

Richard and I always spend Thanksgiving with his family in Princeton, New Jersey. In 2011 we were at his parents’ home on Thanksgiving morning getting ready to start cooking. It was a beautifully crisp fall day and everyone kept saying we should go for a walk. Richard said he wanted to show me a new nature reserve nearby. We arrived at a sunlit meadow with benches under a gazebo. After a few minutes of looking at the view Richard got down on one knee and pulled a small box out of his pocket. I think I screamed, gasped, laughed, and cried simultaneously! I was completely surprised. The ring was a gorgeous 3 stone setting with diamonds that had belonged to his mother. The moment was so thrilling, simple and intimate. I’ve never had such a big smile on my face. We went back to his family’s home where everyone was waiting with champagne and had set up a skype conversation with my family in California. That cross country toast via the internet was pretty special. I truly had a lot to be thankful for that day!

Once the wedding plans started, what made you decide on a Vera Wang gown?

When I started the search for my wedding gown I knew that the Vera Wang flagship store on Madison Avenue would be one of my destinations. To me Vera’s wedding designs are an incredible combination of romance, modernity, and whimsy. Before I tried on any gowns I had a pretty specific idea of the style and silhouette I was looking for. I envisioned something reminiscent of Hollywood in the 1920’s and 30’s. When I tried on the Farrah gown the feeling was truly magical. It was the perfect combination of glamour and ethereal softness. The tulle one shoulder draped over the illusion corset bodice is stunning. As your eye moves down the dress to the layers of tulle and organza you see endless gorgeous little details. I knew I’d found “the one”. My entire experience at Vera Wang was one of the best parts of planning my wedding. My bridal consultant Lori Santoro really understood what I was looking for and gave amazing, honest insights. Once it came time for alterations my stylist Ginger Libby and my tailor Sophia were an absolute pleasure to work with. My mom, who was there for the big decision and fittings, still raves about how lovely everyone at Vera Wang is!

How did you accessorize to make your wedding day unique?

I knew that I wanted to add some sparkle to my look so I chose a satin and crystal sash. To complete my vintage glamour vision I selected a short birdcage veil combined with a tulle flower and feather comb. I wore a very dark purple (almost black) nail color for my wedding day. I loved the edgy contrast it provided. Pavé chandelier earrings and an art deco style cuff completed my look.

What was the inspiration or theme for your wedding?

Richard and I both love the style and elegance of the 1920’s and 30’s. Especially the movies of that time period and their stars. We knew that we wanted to bring that aesthetic to our wedding day. Our wedding venue was Stage 6 at Steiner Studios in Brooklyn. Part of a working movie studio in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, this incredible glass encased space overlooks the Manhattan skyline. The key to us was balancing the vintage influence with the contemporary urban qualities of the venue. By doing that I think we had a celebration that was youthful, fresh and at the same time romantically nostalgic. Our invitations and all of our wedding day paper were done in black and white with scrolling Art Deco designs. For our floral arrangements Enza Anastasi of Diana Gould created gorgeous tall centerpieces with purples and reds, as well as ostrich feathers and draped strands of crystals. The arrangements were set in vintage style silver bowls and or on top of antique candelabras. Looking back I think that having a specific inspiration for the occasion made choosing the details easier. In lieu of a traditional guestbook our guests filled out vintage NYC postcards to place in a 1930’s suitcase for us. We also placed a silver basket full of soft wraps in our wedding colors near the entrance to the expansive outdoor terrace. That way the ladies attending could feel a bit of that old Hollywood glamour and enjoy the fresh air without being chilly.

Did you incorporate any other Vera Wang products into your wedding? (I.e. fragrance, fine papers etc.) If so how?

When I purchased my gown at the flagship store they gave me a beautiful bottle of Vera Wang’s Lovestruck fragrance as a gift. I started wearing it on a regular basis and made sure to wear it on my wedding day!

Did you stay true to the Old English wedding rhyme: Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue. If so, what were yours?

My something old was a vintage brooch that was incorporated into my bouquet. It was loaned to me by my wedding planner, Erica Powell of Ambiance Luxe Wedding Designs, so it was also my something borrowed. My something new was my pair of glittered silver Jimmy Choo peep toe pumps. For my something blue I bought an Agent Provocateur garter with feathers and a blue ribbon.

What tips do you have for new brides picking out their wedding dress?

I think it is enormously helpful to begin the process with some specific ideas of what you’re looking for. Narrowing down the neckline or skirt style you like can make things so much easier. Also, be true to your own personal style. Remember that it’s your wedding day and not a spread in a bridal magazine. The more you bring your unique point of view to your look the more special it becomes. Lastly, I think dressing for your body type and choosing something comfortable is paramount. Make sure you can sit down in your dress and breathe in it (breathing is important!). Above all, have fun and listen to your gut! There can be a lot of opinions about which dress is “the one” but the one that trumps them all has to be yours.

What was your favorite part of the day? And, are there any other anecdotes you would like to share?

One of my absolute favorite parts of the day was our first dance. We chose a 1930’s upbeat Cuban salsa song. I’m a professional dancer as well as an actress so initially I thought I would choreograph a specific routine for us. In the rush of the last month of preparations that never happened. In fact, we never got a chance to practice together with the music. Right before they announced our entrance to the reception we said to each other “I guess we’re winging it!”. We made a couple of split second decisions about how to begin and then we just went for it. It was one of the most exhilarating and joyous moments of my life! We were so fully ourselves. My flower comb flew out of my hair as I did turns across the dance floor. I picked it up, threw it into the crowd and just kept dancing. We’ll never forget that first dance and it proved to me that some things are better when they’re not planned or plotted down to the last detail. Leave some room for surprises on your wedding day! Not the kind that will stress you out but those that will allow you to live in the moment.

First things first, where did you meet your husband? How did you know he was the one?

Michael and I met while working at competing investment banking firms in the oil and gas industry. Prior to dating, we would often meet for coffee or run into one another while picking up our dinner to go. When the time was right, we had a few mutual friends who thought playing match-maker would be genius. However, we had already beat them to the punch, Michael had asked me out on a date. I knew he was the one when I could not imagine my life, and my future, without him in it!

Michael and I were on vacation in Maui, for a few weeks, with his family. He surprised me one afternoon with a weekend gateway, just the two of us, to the neighboring island of Lana’i. Upon arrival, and after a wonderful Cliffside massage, we headed to the beach! Michael seemed rather excited on this particular afternoon, and I would soon figure out why! I will never forget the look in his eyes as he asked me to be his wife! It was the best day of my life!

Once the wedding plans started, what made you decide on a Vera Wang gown?

From a very young age, I have always been in love with the fashion world. When I think wedding gowns, the only name that comes to my mind is Vera Wang! Vera is synonymous with taking wedding gowns to an entirely new level. I love the style, flare and couture nature of Vera’s work! I could not have imagined wearing anyone else on my wedding day! From the moment I tried Freida on, I knew she was perfect!

How did you accessorize to make your wedding day unique?

When it came to accessorizing for the big day, I wanted to make sure that the accessories spoke to my life motto of “living fabulously!” I went with a style true to my personality, without taking away from Freida. My favorite color is red, thus it was imperative that I incorporate that into my accessories for the day. I wore red lipstick, had a red manicure and topped it off with red patent pumps. My husband, Michael, in true form, wore not only a red tie, but solid red socks to match! To add a bit of flare and modernize the look, I opted to wear two strands of Tahitian Black Pearls.

What was the inspiration or theme for your wedding?

The main inspiration behind the theme of our wedding was sophistication and elegance. I kept all the colors neutral to blend in with what is the most spectacular venue.

Did you incorporate any other Vera Wang products into your wedding? (I.e. fragrance, fine papers etc.) If so how?

On my gift registry, for the formal flatware, I selected Vera Wang Wedgewood, in the pattern “Lace”.

Did you stay true to the Old English wedding rhyme: Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue. If so, what were yours?

Yes, of course, I stayed true to the Old English wedding rhyme! Why stray from tradition? My something old was a beautiful Opal ring my Father gave my Mother on their wedding day 37 years ago. My Mother has since given it to me! My something new was my stunning wedding ring and gorgeous Vera Wang gown! My something borrowed was my Mother’s strand of Tahitian Black Pearls and dress watch. One might think it is odd for a bride to wear a watch on her wedding day, but staying in true form to my family, who has a real soft spot for watches, the day would not have been complete without it. My something blue was what was worn beneath my beautiful Freida!

What tips do you have for new brides picking out their wedding dress?

First things first, the number one tip I can give to new brides in selecting their wedding dress is to have fun in the process! This is such a special time in your life and the time spent selecting your gown will be a memory you will have for a lifetime! Be sure to bring your family and close friends along for the ride! It is sure to make it an amazing experience!! Secondly, select a dress that you know you will have fun in on the day of your wedding! You want to be comfortable in your dress so that you can have the time of your life at your wedding! This is your fairy tale ending, be sure you feel like a princess when you are wearing your gown! Trust me, when you find it, you will know! Always go with what your heart says; if you have always dreamed of wearing a ball gown, be sure you do!

What was your favorite part of the day? And, are there any other anecdotes you would like to share?

Wow, what a question! It is really hard to narrow down my favorite part of my wedding day! The entire weekend was more than I ever could have dreamed of! I could do it over every single year. However, I would have to say, the best part was right after Michael and I said our wedding vows to one another, it was official, we were Mr. and Mrs., dreams really do come true!

First things first, where did you meet your husband? How did you know he was the one?

Stephen and I first met in Jr High School in Lynnville, Indiana. The first moment I laid on eyes on him I had a crush. He was such the epitome of cute and cool, that I actually made it my goal to make him my boyfriend. After sometime and convincing we starting dating in 8th grade. Even at a young age I knew we had something special, but most Jr High relationships aren’t supposed to last once you enter high school, and we let the statistics convince us it wasn’t meant to be. Throughout high school we kept each other’s interest, and by senior year we we began dating again. However, by that time I had already committed to go to fashion school in Miami, FL and once again, the odds were against us. So we decided not to use the terms “boyfriend and girlfriend” , and just enjoyed the time we had together until the school year was over. But one week before Christmas 2004, Stephen brought me one red rose every day to my house, explaining they would all make sense on Christmas. On Christmas day, he handed me one artificial rose. Stephen proceeded to tell me that the seven roses he had given that week represented the seven months we had together before we both left for college. He said that six of those roses would die and eventually mean nothing, but he was hoping this rose wouldn’t. Inside the artificial rose he pulled out a promise ring, he told me that our relationship meant more than just a few months together, and asked me if I’d be his girlfriend. That was the moment I knew he was the one. Needless to say, I said yes. We spent the next four years in a long distance relationship as I went to school in Miami, FL and he attended Indiana University. It wasn’t until July 2009 that Stephen joined me in Miami, FL to finally start to live out our fairy tale. It was a long, long, journey and took a lot of sacrifice, but it taught us that even the most unlikely of odds can be overcome if the love is strong enough. And for him, I would do it all over again.

How did he propose? Tell us the story!

It was March 20th 2010 on my 23rd Birthday. Stephen being the hopeless romantic he is planned a wonderful evening in celebration. We had a delicious seafood dinner on the Miami River and then knowing my love of musical plays, surprised me with box seat tickets to see Jersey Boys. After the play he took me on an evening picnic to the beach to enjoy wine and birthday cake. It was the perfect evening for a picnic, the weather was amazing and there was the most beautiful full moon that lit up the beach. After an adorable attempt to light birthday candles and then enjoying our cake, he held me in his arms and said that after all this time apart he didn’t know what we were waiting for anymore, and he asked me to be his wife. He then got on one knee and presented me with a ring that I pointed out at a jewelry store 3 months prior. With no better way to describe it, I became a hysterical crying mess of joy and after a few moments I was finally able to make out the word, “Yes”.

Once the wedding plans started, what made you decide on a Vera Wang gown?

Selecting my wedding gown was probably one of the easiest decisions I made throughout the entire wedding planning process. Since March 2007, I had been working at the amazing bridal and evening wear boutique, Ever After. Over the years I had the amazing opportunity to work with the most gorgeous creations from the greatest bridal designers in the industry. However, the intricate details, beautiful silhouettes, and soft feminine laces of Vera Wang bridal always spoke the most to my personal taste as a hopeful bride-to-be. In April 2010, one month after my engagement, I attended the New York bridal market with Ever After owner, Camille Russler. I had always attended New York market with much enthusiasm, but I knew this trip would be different as I would be viewing each gown with a much more personal point of view. I remember going in to watch the Vera Wang Spring 2011 fashion show, Camille and I had taken seats across from each other on the runway and anxiously waited for the show to start. Each gown that came down the runway was more gorgeous than the last, and it was amazing to see all of the beautiful touches of lace each gown had to offer. Then, “Hilary” came down the runway. The minute the model stepped into the lights of runway in that gorgeous dress, Camille and I locked eyes with each other. Without saying a word, we both immediately knew that gown would be the perfect dress for my wedding day. In bridal we talk about “the moment”, the second you know that you’ve found the perfect dress. For me, seeing that gown on the runway, was my “moment”.

Still, following the code of good bridal stylists everywhere, no final decision was made until I personally tried on the dress. I anxiously waited three months until our Vera Wang trunk show in July. After Saturday appointments were finished, I tried on the beautiful gown for our wonderful Ever After staff and the consensus was quite clear. It was indeed, the perfect gown.

How did you accessorize to make your wedding day unique?

I accessorized my bridal look by adding a beautiful Vera Wang grosgrain sash to give a little touch of fashion. I also selected a vintage style set of earrings, bracelet and hair piece to add to the rustic theme of my wedding. For my shoes, I selected a very adorable pair of Vera Wang Lavender heels with crystal floral accents that complemented the lace pattern of my gown (And were most importantly under 3 inches so I wouldn’t tower over my husband to-be!). Lastly, I completed the look with a dark ivory Vera Wang runway tulle veil for a soft, feminine finishing touch.

What was the inspiration or theme for your wedding?

The theme and inspiration for my wedding was “Rustic Country”. In the community where Stephen and I grew up, farming is very prominent. The history of the surrounding towns were built around the world of farming, as well as the history of my personal ancestors. I had grew up around farms my whole life, and I figured what better way to pay to homage to our history and our future than by making it our wedding day theme.

Also by selecting this theme and holding it near our home town, we were able to use personal sources which made the day even more unique and special. We used straw bails from my grandfather’s farm for decoration and additional seating for the ceremony . The vintage tractor used for our bridal party hayride was one that my father personally restored. My mother made homemade jam for our wedding favors using fruit from her garden. Vintage items used for our decorations came from local antique shops. Our wedding cake was a delicious spice cake of Stephen’s grandmother’s recipe. And all of my bridal party bouquets and decorations were made of wheat and dried local flowers. It was such a fun experience putting a personal touch on so many elements of our wedding day, that not only meant so much to us, but to our family and guests as well.

Did you stay true to the Old English wedding rhyme: Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue. If so, what were yours?

Yes. My something old was an embroidered handkerchief worn by Stephen’s grandmother and mother on their wedding day. My something new was, of course, my Vera Wang bridal gown. My something borrowed was my wedding day jewelry. My something blue was a blue Ever After tag sewn into my wedding gown ( A traditional piece Ever After provides to all of their lucky brides!)

What tips do you have for new brides picking out their wedding dress?

The selection of my wedding gown was an easy one only because of the fact that I had spent years working in the bridal industry. I had come to know exactly what I personally wanted in a wedding gown: what silhouette flattered me, what fabric I liked, the theme I wanted it to compliment, etc. and once I saw it, I knew. The tips I have to give are not only from what I discovered about personally selecting the right gown for myself, but for the years I spent helping other brides select the gown of their dreams.

First, always be open-minded. It’s absolutely a good idea to go into a bridal appointment with some ideas in mind of what your looking for in a wedding gown, but don’t shun away all suggestions. You may think that you know exactly what you want in a gown, but the truth is, you honestly don’t know until you try! The gown you had your eye on in that magazine maybe less than mediocre when you try it in-person. You may have also sworn off wearing satin, but you could be missing the opportunity to try a gorgeous gown that may compliment you in all the right places Try different silhouettes, different fabrics, and let how you feel in the gown be the deciding factor of what you identify with.

Second, keep the number of opinions to a minimum. This is an important decision in your life and of course EVERYONE wants to be a part of it, but bringing your entire family to select your bridal gown can be a recipe for disaster. In my opinion, three people should be the most anyone brings to a bridal appointment. Whether it is your mother, your sister, a friend, the people you take with you to your bridal appointment should be the people whose opinions you value the most. At the end of the day, you will be one wearing the gown and the decision should rest in you and the ones you hold most dear. As for everyone else, invite them to one of your bridal gown fittings so they can still feel included in the process- AFTER the decision has been made.

Lastly, every brides’ “moment” is different. As I had mentioned earlier, that when it comes to selecting a bridal gown, many brides talk about experiencing “the moment,” the point when they’ve realized they’ve found the perfect gown. This experience is greatly anticipated by most brides, and for that reason, many new brides go into the gown selecting process thinking that if they don’t explode into to tears when they find a great gown, it isn’t the one for them. This is truly not the case in all scenarios. Every bride is different and therefore makes decisions differently. That moment of confidence that you’ve found the right gown can come in all different shapes and sizes.

What was your favorite part of the day? And, are there any other anecdotes you would like to share?

My favorite part of the day was honestly walking down the aisle. It is the one point of the day that I truly remember quite vividly. Right before I was getting ready to walk down the aisle, I was standing with my dad anxiously listening to the music, waiting for the change of song to give our cue to start walking. My dad looks at me and says “Are you ready?”. I was so concentrated on listening to the music for the cue, I replied “No Dad, not yet. We have to wait for the music to change.” He looked at me puzzled and said, “No Leah, are you ready for this?” I was so caught up in making the perfect entrance, I had completely forgot to take in the moment and focus on the joy of getting married. Because of my wonderful Dad, I let all my anxieties of wedding stress go and took in every second of walking down that aisle. I remember seeing all of the faces of family and friends who came to share the day with us. I remember finding Stephen at the end of the aisle, locking eyes and then exchanging the biggest smiles, so happy that our big day had finally come. I remember seeing the tears in the eyes of my bridesmaids as I reached the end of the aisle, and them silently apologizing for crying so soon. Every second of that brief moment was truly treasured, and it is a memory that I’m so thankful to have for the rest of my life. Thanks Dad!

Bride: Jaclyn Shaw
Groom: Craig Shaw
Wedding gown style: Josephine
Wedding date: October 20 2012
Boutique purchased: Vera Wang Toronto Location: Scottsdale, Arizona
Photographer: Rebecca Amber Photography

First things first, where did you meet your husband? How did you know he was the one?

Craig & I met when we were out with mutual friends watching the Olympic gold medal hockey game in 2010 (yes we are Canadian)! We realized we both shared a love for hockey & champagne during our celebrations that first night! Our second date to New York was pretty much what sealed the deal and started the journey from Like to Love! We wandered around the city for hours & really got to know each other.

How did he propose? Tell us the story!

Craig wanted to surprise me & to succeed he knew he couldn’t tell anyone before hand. So lets just say I wasn’t the only one who was taken by surprise (his best friends made me take a picture of my hand & send it to them before they would believe him the next day). The proposal was typical Craig style -‐ very laid back & mellow. I had just gotten home from work after a busy day -‐ I was ready to unwind & jumped at the the offer when Craig asked if he could get me a glass of wine. I didn’t think much of it when he returned with a tray with all my favorite goodies… champagne, chocolate & strawberries. I was already down half a glass of champagne before Craig asked me if I was going to open my present. How had I not noticed the small little silver box on the tray? Well before he even got another word out I had already put the ring on my finger, you could say I was a little excited. Later on when my 8 year old niece asked me to tell her exactly what Craig said to me when he proposed I had to laugh because he actually didn’t get a chance to ask me. The best part for me was right after I asked Craig what made him choose that day. He said he actually had zero intentions of proposing that day! He had ordered the ring a few weeks prior and he said once he saw the ring again he got too excited & knew he wouldn’t be able to keep it a secret from me!

Once the wedding plans started, what made you decide on a Vera Wang gown?

Initially I was designing my own dress. As I was looking online for inspiration I saw a black Vera Wang (not the Josephine) and became obsessed with it! As I kept looking every dress I liked seemed to be a Vera Wang. I own a children’s clothing boutique right across the street from the Vera Wang shop in Toronto so as I was walking to work one day I just decided to pop in & try some dresses on. I loved every single dress & even though I already had a sketch for my dress (that I loved) I decided designing my own dress was a mistake… Vera Wang has perfected this -‐ what was I trying to do! Every little detail of the dresses I tried on that day mesmerized me, but I was drawn to the Hayley dress. I saw it in white though & I wanted it in the blush color. Well since I was getting them to bring in the blush dress anyways I asked if their was any way they could bring in a black dress for me to try. A few weeks later the Josephine arrived & I LOVED it! But I will admit I was a little nervous about going with a black dress … would my mom kill me? would Craig kill me? Should I just do it and not tell anyone? Well I probably shouldn’t be telling anyone this, but Craig came with me to pick between the 2 dresses. Only this time when I was there I tried the veil on too & immediately we knew which dress I was going to wear! And we had a fun little secret to keep until everyone saw me walk down the aisle!

How did you accessorize to make your wedding day unique?

Well the fun part of Craig knowing what my dress looked like was that we went shopping for all my accessories together -‐ and Craig actually picked out ALL of my accessories (and I’m the one in the fashion industry). The most unique accessories were our wedding bands -‐ We both exchanged black rings… only instead of a wedding band Craig picked out the most stunning Ivanka Trump black onyx & black diamond ring that I wear on my right hand. I am also in love with the spike Eddie Borgo bracelets I wore. Like my dress we choose more fashion pieces that reflect my personal style more. Now the best part is I wear all the pieces I wore on our wedding day all the time. I really wanted to feel like me on my wedding day I was actually afraid to get my hair & make up done by a stylist because I was afraid I wouldn’t feel like me. So when I finally booked my hair appoint (the day before our wedding) I told the stylist to think more of a runway show -‐ not bridal, and I did my own make-‐up. I love that by choosing a black Vera Wang dress I really got to incorporate my sense of style into the day!

What was the inspiration or theme for your wedding?

Our inspiration was white, relaxed & pretty much anything non-‐traditional goes! We didn’t have a wedding party, but instead asked all of our guests to wear white or sand. We felt like this really included everyone in our day & also made for some gorgeous photos! All our flowers & decorations were white too which looked beautiful in the courtyard where everything was held. The courtyard was lit by candlelight & twinkle lights in the trees which gave a very whimsical feel. Dinner was really spectacular, we had such a small wedding 62 guests that I wanted everyone to be part of the entire day so for dinner we had one long table that everyone sat at, we mixed up all our friends and family & played dance music during dinner which created such an amazing ambience. A few other unique touches were having mini gourmet donuts with homemade dipping sauces instead of a wedding cake -‐ YUMM!! And a professional cigar roller who hand rolled cigars during the reception. So many of our guests have said it was one of the best weddings they have ever been to simply because it was unique & intimate. Our ceremony was original we found an officiant who really shared our story, how we met, what makes our relationship solid, our dreams & aspirations for the future. He helped us to start the day off perfectly & took the time to really know us as a couple. He also suggested adding some fun elements into the ceremony so after we said our vows we had a champagne toast in the middle of the ceremony. We really looked at the day as a big party or celebration to share with our closest family & friends. And wanted a day that reflected who we are, our tastes & FUN!

Did you stay true to the Old English wedding rhyme: Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue. If so, what were yours?
I did really well on the something new, something blue with my Jimmy Choos but I didn’t do so well on the something old or something borrowed…

What tips do you have for new brides picking out their wedding dress?

To pick out something they truly love & to rock it! I was a little worried picking a black dress that I might not get the best reaction from everyone -‐ but I think the fact that I loved it & wore it with confidence made everyone else love it too! It also helps that the dress was absolutely stunning! Also make the experience fun not stressful. Act like a kid playing dress up and try on all the things you normally wouldn’t. I walked in thinking I wanted a blush colored, strapless dress & hated the thought of a veil. I walked out with a black, halter dress & the veil was my most favorite part of the look!

What was your favorite part of the day? And, are there any other anecdotes you would like to share?

The entire day was so amazing!! I would have to say our first dance was one of my favorite parts of the day. We had just finished cocktail hour & everyone else had just sat down for dinner so it was the first few moments I felt like we got to sneak in just the two of us. We danced to ‘Young Forever’ by Jay-‐Z & Beyonce and just had fun with it! It was also really important to me that my 6 niece & nephews had a special part in the day -‐ they are the 6 little loves of my life & all LOVE Craig. When we got engaged they were so excited Craig was going to be their “real uncle”. To include them we had them walk down the aisle just before I did & we also started off the dance party with a dance for just the kids and us. Seeing them walk down the aisle was the best (they had been practicing since they woke up that morning -‐ they were so excited)! My youngest niece was only 1 and barely walking so 2 of the other kids pretty much had to drag her down the aisle -‐ it was sooo adorable & they had sooo much fun that it was really touching for me. It also made all of our guests die with laughter, I was looking down from above before I walked down the stairs & I thought this is absolutely perfect! It really set the tone for a fun, easy going day. Craig said it really helped to calm his nerves too as he was standing at the front all alone.

When we first got engaged I saw this quote “A wedding is a party, not a performance. If at the end of the day you are married to the one you love, then everything went perfectly” I think it’s really important for brides to remember this. It’s a busy day you have tons of people behind the scenes trying to make everything perfect so just enjoy & take the day in (trust me it will go by too fast). And sometimes the little hiccups end up making a great story or great photos! An hour before our wedding Craig & I were taking photos on the golf course and as we were standing in the middle of the green the sprinklers came on -‐ my dress got a little wet, my hair got a little wet & my make-‐up ran a little but it was also alot of fun! And these are some of my favorite photos from the entire day -‐ they show Craig & I laughing, having fun & living in the moment!

Bride: Kristin Fiorillo Maher
Groom: Michael Maher
Wedding gown style: Farrah dress
Wedding date: July 28, 2012
Boutique purchased: Vera Wang
Location: Manhasset, New York
Photographer: Julian Mackler- Mackler Studios

First things first, where did you meet your husband? How did you know he was the one?

My best friend Liz went to Ithaca College and met Mike. Sophomore year he lived next door to her and would always be in her room. He would point to pictures of me hanging in her dorm room and would ask about me and comment that he thought I was cute!! I would talk to Liz several times a week and Mike would always get on the phone with me (we had a phone relationship, before we ever met, we just connected immediately and had a lot in common, I think we both knew given the right timing we had something truly special!!). That summer we both went home to Long Island and discovered we lived only a few towns away from each other. We went on our first date (July 8, 2003) to a Met game with Liz and her boyfriend of the time and the rest is kind of history. We tried to maintain a relationship through college which proved to be quite difficult. When we graduated in 2005 we started dating seriously and here we are now!

He loves me unconditionally, brings out the best in me always, and most of all he makes me laugh, EVERY SINGLE DAY!!!

It’s become a mature relationship based on friendship and sincerity. We don’t put on a show and don’t feel like we have to prove ourselves to anyone. It’s always been about the two of us and those closest to each of us because we both understand that what makes each of us happy ultimately makes us happy in our relationship.

How did he propose? Tell us the story!

The ACTUAL proposal was very sweet and simple, just like our relationship! We had just gotten home from dinner at our favorite Italian restaurant on a random Friday night. We were getting ready for bed in our apartment we have lived in together for 2 years at that time; I was washing my face in the bathroom, when I opened the door he was down on one knee with the ring. We had talked about getting engaged for a while, and I knew it would be soon, so he totally got me! I burst into tears and so did he. It was very intimate, and true to our relationship.

Once the wedding plans started, what made you decide on a Vera Wang gown?

What girl doesn’t want to wear Vera on their wedding day? I was immediately drawn to the Farrah’s soft, feminine, elegant, and romantic silhouette. It felt paper thin on my body and was airy and light perfect for a hot summer wedding. The unique one shoulder bodice was exquisite and exceptionally girly and different. I work in fashion so I appreciate the design, craftsmanship and articulate beauty of every detail that went into the design and execution of this dress.

How did you accessorize to make your wedding day unique?

Yet the gown—perfect as it was—needed one small addition. I had a piece of my late grandfather’s flannel shirt sewn into the bottom of my dress. One of my fondest memories as a child is cuddling against the signature plaid shirts he always wore when he would hold me. I was extremely close to him, and wanted to make sure he was a part of our day and close to me throughout the day. Also, I opted for classic yet more modern touch by adding rose gold accents ( my vintage rose gold earrings and Miu Miu stingray sandals).

What was the inspiration or theme for your wedding?

The feel of the reception was a mix of rustic elegance with beautiful surroundings. Each table was a complete installation of color, texture and candlelight. The tables had natural flax linen runners that were topped with a variety of elements including; antique terra cotta pots holding candles, reclaimed glass bottles and vintage jelly jars holding all one type of white, creme or green flower in abundance, mason jars holding candles and silver mercury glass votives placed in clusters. All of this was worked in and around sheets of birch to bring the outside, in.

We used natural elements infused with rustic, romantic touches. Since the venue already screamed Nautical we opted to not incorporate that theme as the beauty and originality of the club shined through on its own. Seawanhaka transcends time and space. Beneath a Sperry tent (fitting because this tent is made of old sails), dozens of hanging lanterns illuminated rustic decor. Mason jars medicine bottles, vintage vases and aged birch wood filled table tops covered in flax linen runners. Escort cards sat in miniature Adirondack chairs, and burlap bunting hung from our bride and groom’s chairs.

We opted for simple, low flower arrangements made the vast tent more intimate and allowed for more personal conversation between our guests. Each table had a mix of high-and-low arrangements of white and green blooms. Each container held just a single kind of flower. My escort setting was my favorite touch. My florist( Jen Stone of Stone Kelly) built these enormous walls made of birch wood and I had vintage frames hung with past wedding portraits of both our families ( parents, grandparents, great parents, etc)- i thought it was a very personal touch that played homage to our family roots, being that family is very important to us.

Did you incorporate any other Vera Wang products into your wedding? (I.e. fragrance, fine papers etc.) If so how?

At our rehearsal dinner the night before we were gifted a Vera Wang cake cutting set from Mike’s grandmother. She purposely gave it to us so we could use it the next day at our wedding when we cut our cake.

Did you stay true to the Old English wedding rhyme: Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue. If so, what were yours?

Something Old: I had the cameo my father gave my mother almost 35 years ago when they began dating at age 14 sewn onto my bouquet.

Something New: my diamond wedding band

Something Borrowed: 18K Rose Gold and Rose quartz with diamonds (Working in fashion, I was lucky enough to have a stylist friend of mine to let me borrow them for my big day.

Something Blue: When we went to go pick out our wedding bands with our jeweler I was torn between choosing an all diamond band and a sapphire/diamond band. Mike surprised me when went we went to go pick them up and had an all sapphire band made to match my diamond wedding band. Sapphire also happens to be my birthstone!

What tips do you have for new brides picking out their wedding dress?

Stay true to yourself and your style. In my eyes your wedding day is not the day to experiment. Keep it simple, keep it natural, and be you, and most importantly be comfortable- its a long day and I know for me I feel most beautiful when I am comfortable in what I am wearing!

What was your favorite part of the day? And, are there any other anecdotes you would like to share?

From locking eyes with Mike the minute stepped into the church and the feeling of completeness that settled over my nervous heart, to seeing my vision for my reception I had obsessed over for nearly a year and half become a reality, and finally to see the joy and feel the contagious amount of love and happiness shared by not only Mike and I but equally by our closest friends and family as we exchanged our “I do’s.” I could go on and on, but my sister said it best it wasn’t just about the day, but the person I was marrying.

First things first, where did you meet your husband and was it love at first sight?

I met my husband at a sorority event our Sophomore year of college. The sorority met and was told we had 30 minutes to find someone for a date night. The “grab-a-date” event was on, and luckily I grabbed Jeff off of the quad! We had so much fun that night. Neither of us believes in love at first sight, but I did fall in love with his car at first sight (a red 1971 Chevelle with white racing stripes).

How did he propose? Tell us the story!

I am incredibly close to my family, so Jeff wanted to make sure my family was nearby to celebrate after the proposal. My family took a summer vacation to the beach near my favorite city – Charleston, SC. Convinced I was on a “day trip” to Charleston, Jeff and I enjoyed an afternoon meandering the historic downtown streets. Meanwhile, Jeff had given my family instructions on how to decorate the hotel room at the historic Vendue Inn where he would propose. One of my friends who lived in Charleston was also in on the proposal; she lured me to the room by telling me her fiancé had surprised her with a nice room at the Vendue Inn and we should all go grab drinks together. The surprise was almost ruined when we got to the hotel room. When I looked inside the room I saw flowers, rose petals, and a blazing fireplace. Terrified that I was interrupting my friends’ romantic evening, I ran away down the hotel hallway and told Jeff not to go into the room. Jeff eventually convinced me to step inside the room and then he explained it was for us. I was still confused until he dropped down on one knee and proposed. My entire family and Jeff’s mom (who flew in from Kansas City) were waiting for us at the hotel’s rooftop bar after the proposal, also to my surprise.

Once the wedding plans started, what made you decide on a Vera Wang gown?

I was never able to imagine my wedding dress until the moment I put on my Vera Wang gown. My mother, both grandmothers, and one of my friends went wedding shopping one weekend. While we were in between appointments for other dress shops, we decided to pop into B. Hughes bridal in Nashville, TN. My friend pulled my dress off the rack and I was hesitant to try it on. The dress didn’t seem to have any shape on the rack, but the moment I put it on I realized that it was the perfect dress for me. I am so grateful my friend talked me into trying it on, and she will never let me forget that she was the one that found it!

How did you accessorize to make your wedding day unique?

The day before my wedding, my grandmother gave me a gorgeous ring that her husband had given to her. My grandfather passed away before I was born, and my grandmother wanted me to have something from both of them for my special day. To me this ring is a symbol of all the love and support my family has given and will continue to give me me over the years. It compliments my wedding band, which symbolizes the love and support my husband and I will give each other for the rest of our lives.

What was the inspiration or theme for your wedding?

Jeff and I ultimately just wanted everyone to have a good time (from the wedding party to the guests). All the decisions were designed to make our big day a stress free event that people would enjoy. Our colors were navy and off-white, so that the bridesmaids could wear their dresses to other cocktail events. My husband found the groomsmen khaki suits, instead of having to rent a tux. The first big “wedding” purchase was a great band, because Jeff and I are both passionate about music. We were pretty laid back about most of our decisions and it ended up working out for us. We had so much fun on the day of our wedding and so did our guests. If you don’t believe me you can look at the pictures from the dance floor, they are a hilarious!

What tips do you have for new brides picking out their wedding dress?

Bring a friend who will tell you the truth. I knew my mother and grandmothers would say that I looked great in everything, even if the dress was lackluster. So, I brought my friend who works as a stylist in Nashville and she was the one who noticed the dress on the rack. It wasn’t until she forced me to try it on that I knew it was the one.

What was your favorite part of the day? And, are there any other anecdotes you would like to share?

After Jeff and I said our vows a sense of overwhelming joy came over me. I knew I was going to spend the rest of my life with my best friend and the best man I know. A wedding can keep you busy, but I think it is important to take a moment and realize the meaning of the vows that you are saying to one another. The thirty seconds after we walked down the aisle as Mr. and Mrs. Simpson is when the sanctity and commitment of marriage truly hit me. That was my favorite part of the day.
