First things first, where did you meet your husband and was it love at first site? Dave and I met at work, when we both worked for the same fashion company. He was a designer living in NY and I was a Merchandiser working in SF. Our similar tastes and opinions led us to talking at work, and soon became outside of work as well. Our endless phone conversations soon became a two year long distance relationship. We racked up miles and phone minutes for two years. We both agreed that this relationship was ready for the next level – so I moved to New York in 2008 to be with him, as I knew he was the person I wanted to spend my life with.
How did he propose? Tell us the story! It was a busy week for myself, as it was fashion week and I was working longer hours than normal. Dave had told me to meet him at a neighborhood restaurant, but I was so tired from the day that I just wanted to go home and spend time with him and our French bulldog Pacman. He was discouraged, but agreed to just stay home as I was very insistent. Once I got home, he was acting a bit strange but I didn’t think much into it. Before I knew it, he was proposing to me in our living room with a ring in one hand and Pacman in the other. I was speechless for a few seconds because I was so shocked – he had to remind me that I had to say yes! He had made dinner reservations for us at our favorite special restaurant in the city to celebrate the night. And I had later found out the story of how it happened that day. Dave cannot keep anything from me – gifts or secrets. He had picked up the ring from the jeweler that morning, tucked it away in his sock drawer, snuck peaks at it during the day, and proposed that night.
Once the wedding plans started, what made you decide on a Vera Wang gown? I have always loved Vera Wang and envisioned that I would wear one of her dresses when I got married. When I tried on other dresses, I always came back to Vera Wang as the detail and quality are just impeccable. And when I found the Delany, I knew I didn’t have to look anywhere else.
How did you accessorize to make your wedding day unique? Delany comes with a beautiful grosgrain bow, but I decided to use a horsehair bow from the collection. I loved that it gave a subtle dimension to the dress. It was absolutely perfect! I wanted something that would be a little unexpected, and it was the perfect amount for the dress.
What was the inspiration or theme for your wedding? Dave and I wanted a destination wedding as we love the tropical feeling of Turks and Caicos and how relaxed the island lifestyle is. We wanted our wedding to be a casual gathering of our closest friends and family – and it doesn’t hurt that the location is on a beautiful island. When we found the Coral House as our location, we knew it would be perfect for us – as the setting was so chic and beautiful. Our décor was very simple, as we wanted the beauty of the house and location to shine and be the focus. The color palette was mostly white with some green accents for the flowers. The most important thing for me was the lighting and having illumination at night to make everything glow. We used lanterns as much as could help to illuminate.
Did you stay true to the Old English wedding rhyme: Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue. If so, what were yours?
- Something old – My Finn necklace that Dave gave me a few years ago that I wear every day.
- Something borrowed – My Mom’s diamond earrings.
- Something Blue – Hanky Panky.
- Something New – My wedding dress!
What tips do you have for new brides picking out their wedding dress? Being open minded and trying on different types of dresses is really important. I had the type of dress I wanted in my mind, and only wanted to try on those types of dresses – but I ended up choosing something completely different than what I wanted. You’ll be surprised how your ideal dress can change so quickly! Personally for me, I also felt like having a smaller group of people when trying on dresses was more beneficial. It’s your wedding day and your wedding dress – so your opinion should be the most important.
What was your favorite part of the day? And, are there any other anecdotes you would like to share? There were so many special moments during the day, but I think the first moment we saw one another during our ‘sneak preview’ was truly special. I am so happy we did a preview before the wedding, as it was so nice to have a moment to ourselves and enjoy the moment.
