First things first, where did you meet your husband and was it love at first site? We met while living in the same apartment complex in Charlotte, North Carolina, during the summer of 2007. This was the perfect place to live during that time of our lives because we were transitioning from college life into the real world. The complex was filled with young people and there were frequent social events for the apartment community. At one of the many pool parties, I remember discussing with my girlfriends, “Wow, I have a crush on that guy.” Apparently, Brandon was thinking the same thing about me. There was a very strong connection from the beginning and plenty of flirting all summer long. That same fall, Brandon asked me to be his girlfriend. The rest is history. There is no doubt that we were both meant to be living at that post-college, frat pad of an apartment complex…maybe it was fate, or just good timing, but living there changed our lives for the better!
How did he propose? Tell us the story! On November 3, 2010, Brandon and I were preparing to head to a fancy dinner to celebrate three years of dating. As we were about to walk out the door, Brandon pulled out a surprise gift! (We said no gifts!). When I opened it, I was so excited that he had purchased us a new digital SLR camera for us to take and use on our Maui vacation that we were leaving for in a few days. I was already over the moon with joy at this point! So we set the camera up and used the self-timer to take a picture together before heading out to dinner. After the picture was taken, I said my standard line to Brandon, “Do we look cute?” and I went to view the photos that we had just snapped of ourselves. As I scanned through the pictures, there was an extra photo of a sign that said “Will you marry me?!” I was completely confused and caught off guard, but as I turned to look at Brandon, he was down on one knee with the ring and he popped the question! There was screaming, many tears, and much laughter, and I obviously said YES! Then, instead of going to dinner, Brandon had arranged to have a prepared dinner and wine/champagne catered in, which was AMAZING because he knew that I would want to make phone calls to friends and family! After making our calls and eating our delicious meal, we walked over to one of our favorite spots in Charlotte for dessert! The entire night was absolutely perfect for us! The BEST thing about the proposal, for me, was that I was completely surprised. I had no idea — not the slightest clue — that we were going to be engaged that night! Then two days later we were off to Maui for a week to celebrate our engagement.
Once the wedding plans started, what made you decide on a Vera Wang gown? The second I walked into the space at Vera Wang Chicago I had a feeling that I was going to find the dress for me! Vera Wang was the total experience – gorgeous boutique, wonderful stylists, BEAUTIFUL gowns, and talented alterations staff (I’m 4’10” and 90 lbs, I know it’s not easy to alter a dress for a gal my size). Ethel was actually the FIRST and ONLY dress that I tried on in VW. I had 2 best friends/bridesmaids with me and we were all crying and laughing, Ethel was THE DRESS! We called my Dad and husband to be, and were chanting “Say YES to the dress!” and toasting champagne. The only thing that could have made my experience any better would be to have met Vera Wang herself.
How did you accessorize to make your wedding day unique? I pulled pieces that would compliment and flatter me in the Ethel gown. I went for accessories that were “me” but also pretty and special for our big day. I pieced together items from several different designers that I thought still made my “look” look cohesive but not too matchy match. I love all of my accessories and have been able to wear them again since our wedding day!
What was the inspiration or theme for your wedding? White. Clean. Crisp. White. Classic. Modern. Did I say White?
Did you incorporate any other Vera Wang products into your wedding? (I.e. fragrance, fine papers etc.) If so how? We used Vera Wang toasting flutes at our rehearsal dinner. We also registered for several Vera Wang home items such as our china and picture frames.
Did you stay true to the Old English wedding rhyme: Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue. If so, what were yours? I absolutely did! My Something Old was my grandmother’s ring that I wore on my right hand. My Something New was my beautiful Vera Wang Ethel dress. My Something Borrowed was a lace handkerchief that I wrapped into my bouquet that my mother carried on her wedding day. And lastly, my Something Blue was a gift from one of my bridesmaids given to me at my bachelorette party.
What tips do you have for new brides picking out their wedding dress? Go with your gut! When you know it’s the right dress for you, you know! Choose what you feel the most beautiful and comfortable in. It’s your day! You should feel the best and happiest you have ever felt in your life!
What was your favorite part of the day? And, are there any other anecdotes you would like to share? My favorite part of the day has to be our “first look” that our wonderful photographer, Kristin Vining Photography, captured for us. It was such a special and intimate moment between Brandon and I. When we saw each other for the first time, we both cried and hugged and laughed. The feeling was something indescribable. I just felt so happy and knew that everything was right in that moment. I could not wait to marry Brandon! From that point on we were both able to relax, get hitched, and live it up at the reception! This is so cliché, but our wedding day truly was the best day of my life!
Brandon and I both enjoyed the wedding planning process and could not have had such a perfect day without all of our wonderful vendors and our amazing wedding party. We have THE best friends in the world! Thank you to everyone that contributed to us having such a fabulous wedding day, especially our photographer, Kristin Vining Photography, our wedding planner, Kate FitzGerald with I Do Details Events, and hair and makeup by Lindsey Regan Thorne “be pretty”. Brandon and I cannot thank everyone enough!
