Did you have a certain style in mind when you started your search for a dress?
I knew I wanted a mermaid style of some sort. That particular design of gown always seems so fashionable, chic, and most often flattering. I wanted a gown with style and edge as opposed to a traditional type of gown.
What made you decide on your Vera Wang gown?
When I put the gown on after trying on many, I felt instantly glamorous…like “Carrie Bradshaw.” The gown had the perfect combination of style and elegance and also fit my body type perfectly.
Did you bring anyone along dress shopping? If so, did their opinions influence your final decision?
My mother, sister, and a girlfriend came dress shopping with me. Their opinions were definitely of importance and influence, however ultimately I wanted to insure I personally felt beautiful and confidant in whatever I chose. When I saw myself in the dress and then proceeded to see their awestruck reactions, I immediately knew it was “the one.”
How did you accessorize to make your wedding day outfit unique?
My vision for my wedding day “look” was a mixture of classic old Hollywood meets modern chic. I added a diamond encrusted belt, diamond chandelier earrings, a vintage diamond cuff on one wrist and new diamond tennis bracelets stacked on the other. Later in the evening, I wore an ivory St. John mink stole. My hair was down with sculpted curls pulled to one side of my neck. The combination of things I added created just the look I was hoping for.
What was the inspiration or theme for your wedding?
The theme for our wedding was a combination of two contrasting styles…old Hollywood meets modern chic. It sounds like an odd juxtaposition but turned out just as unique and elegant as I had envisioned. It was to be a very formal affair, with clean/sleek colors such as white, silvers, and greys. Soft blue lighting and all white flowers accented the simply chic ambiance.
Did your gown style relate to any other design elements of the wedding?
The tiered, silk organza layers of my mermaid style gown were also reflected in my bridesmaid gowns. The girls wore long Grecian style, organza gowns in charcoal grey. The dresses were one shouldered with an organza tiered strap similar to the bottom half of my gown. I also love the idea of contrast…clean vs. drama, which was exemplified in my black invitations with white calligraphy script.
What was your favorite part of the day?
My favorite part of the day was our grand entrance to Coldplay’s “Strawberry Swing” and first dance to Ray Lamontagne’s “You are the Best Thing.”
What tips do you have for new brides picking out their wedding dress?
My advice to new brides searching for wedding gowns is to choose something that best represents you, your personality, and your style. Also make sure that you feel comfortable and confidant in whatever you choose…it is after all the most important outfit/look you will wear in your lifetime.
Are there any other anecdotes you would like to share?
One interesting tid-bit of our wedding is the fact that our brother and sister are also married. They were married six years ago and we are the Godparents to their 2 1/2 year old twin girls. Our families have known each other and been friends our entire lives, and my husband and I were first grade “boyfriend/girlfriend.”
