Did you have a certain style in mind when you started your search for a dress?
No! I knew I wanted strapless and I knew I didn’t want a large, full-skirted, gown but I didn’t know much beyond that! I tried on everything from lace to organza to satin and silk faille! I had no idea what fabric I wanted so that was the biggest challege. I wanted something timeless and classic, but that also felt modern too.
What made you decide on your Vera Wang gown?
I have always dreamed of wearing Vera Wang on my wedding day and as it turned out I ONLY liked Vera Wang dresses! It didn’t matter where I went, I only liked Vera dresses, it was really weird. I like how her dresses are classic but with a “twist.” They seem to be updated versions of very traditional gowns. They are so well made and truly make you feel your very best.
Did you bring anyone along dress shopping? If so, did their opinions influence your final decision?
I brought my Mom and my sister, my Maid of Honor. My Mom is my best friend (besides my husband!) and she is extremely honest. She never hesitates to tell me her opinion about a dress and knows my style very well! My sister is young, she’s only 17, and I could just tell in her eyes when I would try on a dress whether she thought it had that ‘special somethig extra.’
How did you accessorize to make your wedding day outfit unique?
I kept things very simple. I wore white pearls that my husband bought for me during our first year of dating, with pearl and diamond earings and an antique pearl bracelet that I brorrow from my Aunt Kay. I wore my hair up to really let the dress shine. I wore a chapel length tulle veil (also from Vera Wang). I love that dress!!!
What was the inspiration or theme for your wedding?
The inspiration of our wedding was something we named “updated traditional.” We wanted to keep things very classic but with modern updates like flat-paneled tableclothes instead of pleated and lots of candles. The theme of the wedding was FUN! Billy and I have been dating for seven years and we have so many fun memories and many of the same friends. Having fun and enjoying our marriage celebration was most important to us.
Did your gown style relate to any other design elements of the wedding?
Everything was simple, elegant and sophiscated, just like the dress. The wedding was black tie but the groomsmen wore white dinner jackets instead of tuxes. The cake had satin ribbons at the bottom of each of the six layers. The invitations were simple and very traditional — Ecru Crain paper, Black Rook font.
What was your favorite part of the day?
Saying “I Do!!!”
What tips do you have for new brides picking out their wedding dress?
Have fun!!! Try on tons of dresses and lots of styles!!! You really can’t tell what a dress looks like until you try it on so try them all on and if you hate it, it’s okay, move on!
Are there any other anecdotes you would like to share?
I had the most amazing experience at Vera Wang. I must say that from start to finish, the entire thing was flawless. The girl who greets you at the front door (I wish I knew her name-she has brown hair, very cute, skinny) was efficient, polite and friendly when we made our appointment and when we arrived. Our consultant was unbelievable. She was attentive but also gave us space when we needed to talk alone. She was happy, composed and most of all knowledgable about every single dress. There wasn’t a question she didn’t know the answer to! I think I must have given her 12 hugs by the time the appointment was over. And the woman who was in charge of my fittings was equally as fabulous! What a hard worker and such a professional. I must say my fitter is the BEST. That is exactly the type of person you want fitting you in a wedding dress. She is detail oriented and a perfectionist. She is beyond patient and so sweet, cute and loveable. I really had the most unbelievable experience and would recommend that anyone go to Vera Wang for their wedding dress!
