Did you have a certain style in mind when you started your search for a dress?
The theme of our wedding was classic and elegant. I wanted a dress that I could look back at 20 years from now and still be in love with. I knew I wanted an A-line silhouette as it is a classic wedding style. I also knew I wanted something that was beautiful without all the beading and lace embelishments. When I started the search I wanted to try on as many dresses as possible. I did not want to rule anything out completely, so I had an open mind when I started my search for a dress.
What made you decide on your Vera Wang gown?
The first time I put on my dress I felt so delicate and beautiful. The layers of silk organza looked soft and romantic and the silhouette and accent belt were very flattering. I was in awe of the intricate details and unique design of the dress, it all came together so beautifully. I have heard people say that they ‘just knew’ when they tried on their dress. For me, there were a few beautiful dresses that I liked almost equally, but the Vera Wang made me feel the most beautiful.
Did you bring anyone along dress shopping?
I brought my mom dress shopping with me. She was able to stand back and let me decide which dress I wanted, but once I had it narrowed down to a few, she let me know she loved my dress as much as I did. She was great for letting me know when dresses were not right by making faces!
How did you accessorize to make your wedding day outfit unique?
The dress came with an ivory belt that finished with a beautiful bow. I wore the bow at the back of the dress for the church ceremony and then moved it to the front for the reception. I then switched the bow for a Vera Wang black belt with flowers for the evening part of the reception. Since my wedding was in early Spring, it was still cool outside, so I paired the dress with elbow-length black leather gloves, black Chanel sunglasses and an ivory pashmina for when I was outdoors. My shoes were black leather Valentino’s with a flower on them, which tied in nicely with the flowers on the Vera belt. I wanted to keep the jewellery to a minimum to let the beautiful details in the dress shine. I wore large pearl earrings that my husband gave me as a wedding present and a diamond bracelet.
What was the inspiration or theme for your wedding?
The theme for our wedding was simple, elegant and classic. Our reception venue had been a great dance hall in the 20′s, so we wanted to channel that feel into our wedding day. The wedding colours were black and white with an accent colour of light blue. The ceremony was held at the same 100 year old church that my parents got married in. We played jazz music during dinner and then danced the night away.
Did your gown style relate to any other design elements of the wedding?
The flowing style of the dress came into play when deciding on the invitations. We wanted them to have that same romantic feel as the dress. My sister made over 200 sugar flowers for our cake that were inspired by the flowers on the Vera belt.
What was your favorite part of the day?
It is very difficult to pick just one moment. After many months of planning we enjoyed every minute of our wedding day and were so happy with how everything came together. One mooment that I will always remember is when the ceremony was over we stood on the church steps with all our guests to capture a group picture. The church was on a busy road downtown and everyone walking and driving by honked their horns and cheered for us. I felt such joy at that moment, with our ceremony complete we were officially married, standing together, surrounded by all our family and friends. It was a moment filled with such happiniess that I will remember forever.
What tips do you have for new brides picking out their wedding dress?
It is good to have an idea of what you want in a dress, but try to keep an open mind when dress shopping. Try on different styles and silhouettes, you never know what you might fall in love with!
Are there any other anecdotes you would like to share?
On the day of your wedding make sure you make time to spend a few minutes together alone, soaking up the day, and taking in everything you worked for.
