Kill Bill Soundtrack

Javier Peral, Music Director for Vera Wang Shows, worked with Vera to create a music playlist for her Spring 2011 RTW show. Here, he talks about her inspiration for the selections:

Around mid-August I received an email describing the initial inspiration for Spring 11 collection: A list of films that was eventually narrowed down to Kill Bill for its toughness and clash of cultures.

From both movie soundtracks we focused on one song, “About Her” by Malcolm McLaren, which samples lyrics from The Zombie’s “She’s not There.”

Vera wanted to hear different versions of the original and I came across a jazz rendition by Christy Baron that we found incredibly sexy.

The other selections were instrumental percussion music from Wadaiko Matsuriza, a troupe of Japanese Drummers, and an old CD I purchased many years ago and had never opened until this show. This provided us with one more connection to Kill Bill because of its martial sound.

Other more modern instrumental pieces were: Isan “Merman Sound” and Oval “Beige”.

The result completed the aesthetic of Vera’s SS 11 collection, an assortment of modern sportswear with references to Asian elements.  — Javier Peral
